Diablo IV Item Rarity Explained

Diablo IV Item Rarity

Are you curious about the different types of item quality/rarity that will be included in Diablo IV's loot pool? Our guide has everything you need to know! It provides a comprehensive overview of the game's itemization system, so you can fully understand how to gear up before the beta launch.

Taking a look at the different rarities of gear pieces is a good place to start. There are five different categories at launch: Common, Magic, Rare, Legendary, and Unique. While Common items will make a return in Diablo IV, players can expect them to offer base affixes rather than Magic ones.

Magic items are more powerful than Common items, adding one or two Affixes to the basic item. Affixes on higher quality tiers offer greater bonuses, such as +15% compared to the standard +10%, prompting players to reconsider dismissing blue drops. They are denoted by their name being colored blue, as opposed to a Common item's white name color. The first time a Magic item is dropped from a chest or a monster, it appears as unidentified and not identified (in Diablo I and Diablo II). In order to identify a Magic Item, you will see certain words added to its name, either prefixes (such as "Brutal Short Sword"), suffixes ("Axe of Frost"), or combined words ("Glowing Ring of Craftsmanship"). An item's prefix or suffix represents one of its magical properties. One Magic Item cannot have more than one prefix or suffix. Therefore, there can be no more than two affixes on a Magic item. A Magic item has a 1/4 probability of possessing both prefix and suffix, a 1/4 chance of solely having the former, and a 1/2 likelihood of exclusively featuring the latter.

Then we have Rare items that can roll up to five random Affixes. Rare items are marked with yellow in their names. Rare items, much like magical ones, possess randomly selected magical attributes. However, while magic items usually only have one or two attributes, rare items in both games can boast up to 6 such features. The name of each Rare item is randomly generated and has no relation to the affixes it bears. It is always composed of two parts, both of which are determined by the item's type. Rares in Diablo 4 can have a whopping random affixes (sockets are included in this count). If all of the affixes are desirable and their values are at the higher end of their ranges, you've likely found a valuable item.

Then we have Legendary items that can roll four Affixes and a Legendary Aspect. Legendary Items will have an equal or even greater power level than Set Items. Sub-types include "Sacred Legendary" and "Ancestral Legendary." Legendaries grant buffs to the player. A Legendary's property can be transferred from one item to another by removing its "aspect" (this destroys the original item) and transferring it. This can only be done once. However, the Codex of Power allows players to choose buffs for their Legendaries at will. Sacred and Ancestral Legendaries are only available towards the end of the game. Legendaries cannot be traded.

Unique items that will roll four affixes and then have their unique effect. But Unique items are static roles, so their Affixes do not change. And to make it a bit more simple, Unique items aren't exactly like any other gear piece in the game. Players can only equip one Unique item at a time, and we suspect a lot of top-tier builds will be based on these items.

Now you know all about the different types of item quality and rarity in Diablo 4. As soon as something changes regarding Diablo 4's loot system, we will update this article.
